A forecast may look numerically precise, but if it is not grounded in current commitments and buyout visibility, it may not be reliable enough to support decisions.

That is why commitments deserve a consistent place in the Monthly Job Review process.

What commitments mean

In this context, commitments generally include executed subcontracts, issued purchase orders, and other meaningful bought‑out obligations expected to hit the job.

These numbers matter because they answer a simple question: how much of the forecast is supported by real pricing, and how much is still assumption?

What leadership should want to know
    • What has been committed?
    • What still needs to be bought out?
    • What scope gaps or pending exposures exist?
    • Where is the biggest uncertainty?
    • What action is required this month—and who owns it?
What reduces forecast confidence
    • Incomplete buyout on major scopes
    • Scope gaps discussed but not quantified
    • Pending commitments/exposure buried in notes

    • Budget
    • Committed amount

    • Notes on scope gaps or risk items

Red flags to watch
    • Large portions of the cost remain uncommitted
    • Scope gaps are known but not quantified
    • The commitments report is stale or not trusted
    • The forecast does not move even though the commitments have changed
