We could all use more good news right now. Here’s a story about SpongeBob, spare change and our own Jeff Jones. Get ready to smile.
It all started last week when Utah sports writer Andy Larsen was sorting his spare change from his childhood piggy bank shaped like SpongeBob SquarePants. He realized other people in Utah could use the money more than he could. With nearly 27,000 Twitter followers, he reached out to see if someone could use the $165.84 more than he could. Within minutes more donations started pouring in. The tweet snowballed and more than $55,000 in donations came in over the next few days.
Among the first to get on board was Jeff Jones, Haynie & Company partner.
“I was thinking, ‘We’re not having a big Thanksgiving dinner this year, I can use some of the money we would have spent to hopefully help some other people,’” Jeff said.
With the pandemic keeping people from getting together, the online effort started by Andy Larsen and his spare change became something larger. It created a sense of community.
“It felt like it took on a life of its own,” Jeff said. “Man, it’s sure been fun to be a part of it.”
